Pakistan Likely to Become First Export Customer of China’s 5th-Generation J-35A Stealth Fighter Jets

China has unveiled the first export version of its advanced J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighter jet. Many experts believe Pakistan will be the first country to buy this powerful aircraft. The development was highlighted by Chinese state media in early May 2026, showing an export prototype marked with AVIC branding.

The J-35A is a twin-engine stealth fighter developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It features advanced stealth technology, an AESA radar, internal weapons bays, and modern avionics. The jet can reach speeds of around Mach 1.8 to 2.0, with a combat range of about 1,200 km. It can carry air-to-air missiles like the PL-15 and PL-17, as well as precision-guided bombs. This makes it a strong multi-role fighter suitable for both air defense and ground attacks.

Reports suggest Pakistan may acquire around 40 J-35A jets as part of a larger defense package. This package also includes KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft and HQ-19 missile defense systems. Pakistani pilots have already started training in China, raising hopes for early deliveries possibly by late 2026 or earlier.

This deal would mark China’s first export of a full stealth fighter jet. It would greatly boost the Pakistan Air Force’s capabilities and help modernize its aging fleet. The move comes amid strong defense ties between Pakistan and China. It may also shift the air power balance in South Asia.

Experts say the J-35A offers good value compared to Western options like the F-35. However, some questions remain about its real-world performance and Pakistan’s ability to afford the full package.
