Iran World Cup Team Lands in Mexico Wearing “168” Pins to Honor Minab Victims

by Mahnoor Arif

Iran’s national football team arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, on Sunday wearing special gold-colored pins with the number “#168”. The pins honor the 168 victims, mostly schoolgirls, killed in a missile strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, southern Iran, on February 28, 2026.

The deadly strike happened on the first day of the conflict in the region. Many young children and teachers lost their lives when the school was hit. Iranian state media and officials have kept the tragedy in the public eye, using symbols like school backpacks to remember the young victims.

The team’s gesture shows national solidarity and turns the painful event into a symbol of remembrance. Players wore the pins visibly as they got off the plane. This comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, begins on June 11.

Iran faces political challenges during the tournament. Due to tensions, the team had to move training to Mexico and deal with visa issues and travel limits for matches in the US. Iran will open their campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles.

The pins have drawn attention worldwide, mixing sports with politics and reminding everyone of the human cost of conflict. Fans and officials are watching how FIFA handles such symbols during matches.
