Pakistan Set to Fully Adopt E-Passports Nationwide

by Mahnoor Arif

The Pakistani government has decided to fully switch to electronic passports (e-passports) across the country. This major reform aims to modernise passport services, boost security, and stop fraud. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced the decision after chairing a high-level meeting at the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports.

Speaking to the media, Naqvi said the complete transition from machine-readable passports to e-passports will prevent forgery and make Pakistani documents stronger and more trusted worldwide. E-passports have advanced security features, including biometric data, which will help align Pakistan with international standards. This change will also allow smoother travel through e-gates at airports globally.

Several other important reforms were approved. From July 1, all passport offices will become fully cashless to reduce corruption and middlemen. Citizens will soon enjoy doorstep passport delivery, saving them time and effort. Online applications will shift to the improved Pak-ID platform for easier processing and real-time tracking.

The government is also reviewing a new Business Passport policy to help frequent business travellers. Normal passport delivery time has already been reduced from 21 to 14 days. These steps promise a faster, safer, and more digital experience for all Pakistanis.
