Kuwait wants Saudi Arab to Style Defense Pact with Pakistan, Reuters

Kuwait is seeking to strengthen its defence cooperation with Pakistan, with discussions reportedly focusing on a possible arrangement similar to Pakistan’s existing defence pact with Saudi Arabia, according to Reuters.

The talks are still at an early stage, with sources familiar with the discussions saying Kuwait is interested in expanding its security partnership with Islamabad. The proposed cooperation could include defence procurement, military capabilities, and other forms of security assistance.

According to Reuters, Kuwait has asked for a stronger Pakistani security presence, potentially involving military personnel, fighter jets, drones, air defence systems, and other defence-related facilities. However, a Pakistani security official said that the deployment of combat troops was not being considered at this stage.

Pakistan and Kuwait already have a defence cooperation agreement covering areas such as military training and joint exercises. The latest discussions could represent a significant expansion of that relationship.

In return, Pakistan is reportedly seeking greater cooperation in the energy sector and investment. One proposal under discussion involves bonded fuel storage in Pakistan, building on an existing government-to-government diesel supply arrangement between the two countries.

The discussions come amid heightened regional tensions and growing interest among Gulf countries in strengthening defence partnerships. Pakistan has emerged as an important potential security partner because of its large military, defence industry, and long-standing relationships with Gulf states.

However, analysts have warned Pakistan to carefully consider the risks of taking on additional security commitments. The outcome of the talks remains uncertain, and it is not yet clear whether they will ultimately lead to a formal defence pact.
