Umar Saif Questions Pakistani Universities’ Celebrations of 2027 Rankings

by urooj Fatima

Dr. Umar Saif has questioned the way Pakistan celebrates its position in international university rankings, calling for greater focus on the actual quality of higher education and research.

Saif, a computer scientist and former federal minister, has previously highlighted concerns about Pakistan’s universities and the need to improve higher education. He has argued that Pakistan needs stronger universities to develop skills in areas such as technology and artificial intelligence.

His comments have renewed discussion about whether improvements in university rankings should be treated as a major achievement or whether more attention should be given to research quality, teaching standards and graduate employability.

Umar Saif has also been involved in efforts to measure the research performance of Pakistani universities. The Information Technology University’s Quality Research Ranking evaluated more than 200 Pakistani universities and research institutions using data from the Scopus database.

The debate comes as Pakistani universities continue to appear in major international rankings. However, different ranking systems use different indicators, meaning a university can receive significantly different positions depending on the methodology used.

Saif’s remarks have therefore raised a broader question: should Pakistan focus mainly on celebrating better rankings, or should universities concentrate on building stronger research institutions, improving education quality and producing graduates with skills needed by the economy?
