Heavy monsoon rainfall has increased the risk of urban flooding in Pakistan’s twin cities, Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with authorities remaining alert as the wet spell continues.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of the twin cities. Several roads and low-lying locations have already experienced water accumulation following intense showers.
The situation has raised concerns over rising water levels in Leh Nullah, a major drainage channel in Rawalpindi that can quickly swell during intense monsoon rainfall. Emergency teams and relevant departments have been placed on alert to monitor vulnerable areas and respond to possible flooding.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying neighbourhoods and near streams, nullahs, and drainage channels. Motorists are also urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and stay away from flooded roads.
