GTA V Runs in Chrome Without Installation or Cloud Gaming

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) briefly became playable directly through Google Chrome without requiring players to install the traditional PC version or use a conventional cloud gaming service.

An unofficial browser project called PlayGTA5 appeared online on October 6, 2026. Videos shared on social media showed GTA V running inside Chrome on an Apple Mac with an M3 Pro chip. The project quickly went viral before the website went offline only a few hours later.

The surprising part was that the game did not appear to be streamed from a remote cloud server. Technical reports indicated that much of the game was running locally inside the browser using technologies such as WebAssembly and WebGPU. This allowed browser software to handle parts of GTA V’s engine and graphics.

Players reportedly needed to download roughly 700 MB of data before starting the game, while additional assets could be loaded during gameplay. However, the 700 MB figure did not represent the complete GTA V game compressed to that size. A technical analysis found that the broader browser project contained significantly more data that was downloaded as needed.

The browser version reportedly supported Story Mode and free roaming, while GTA Online was not available. Some reports also indicated support for smartphones and different input methods.

The project was unofficial and was not authorized by Rockstar Games. The website was taken offline shortly after going viral. While some reports attributed the removal to Take-Two Interactive or Rockstar, neither company had publicly confirmed the reason in the reports reviewed.
