The government has launched an awareness campaign to reduce single-use plastic consumption and encourage the use of reusable bags and environmentally friendly alternatives. The initiative will cover markets, shopping centres, restaurants, educational institutions, parks and other public spaces.
Officials say plastic waste contributes to blocked drainage systems, environmental pollution and poor waste management. Reducing plastic consumption is therefore considered an important step towards improving cleanliness and protecting public health.
Authorities are seeking cooperation from traders, shopkeepers, food businesses, industries and residents to make the campaign successful. The government is also encouraging businesses to adopt affordable alternatives to plastic bags and other restricted products.
According to officials, plastic bags and other prohibited plastic products will not be permitted for commercial use in Islamabad after December 31, 2026. Medical equipment, medicines and plastic items used in hospitals will be exempted, while certain businesses may receive additional time to arrange alternatives.
The initiative will require effective monitoring, public participation and consistent enforcement to achieve its objectives. If successful, Islamabad could set an example for other Pakistani cities seeking to reduce plastic pollution and improve urban cleanliness.
The campaign marks a renewed effort to enforce existing restrictions and promote environmentally responsible practices across the federal capital.
