China-North Korea 3-Kilometre Trade Bridge Opens After 12-Year Wait

China and North Korea have officially opened a long-delayed 3-kilometre bridge connecting the two neighbouring countries, marking a significant development in their trade and economic relations.

The New Yalu River Bridge links Dandong, a Chinese border city, with Sinuiju in North Korea. The four-lane crossing officially opened on October 15, 2026, after remaining unused for around 12 years despite being completed in 2014.

The project faced lengthy delays because connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side were unfinished. Border restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic also disrupted cross-border movement and trade.

Trucks decorated with Chinese and North Korean flags began crossing the bridge following the opening ceremony. Chinese Premier Li Qiang and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song addressed the ceremony through video messages, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the two countries.

The new bridge is expected to improve the transportation of goods, including raw materials, heavy machinery and other commercial supplies. It will also provide an alternative to the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which has long served as a major land connection between the neighbours.

China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner, making the new crossing strategically important for both countries. However, analysts caution that the bridge alone may not lead to a dramatic increase in trade because international sanctions and political considerations continue to affect economic activity.

The opening comes amid efforts by Beijing and Pyongyang to strengthen bilateral ties and improve regional connectivity.

While the bridge represents an important infrastructure milestone, its long-term economic impact will depend on future trade policies, border operations and relations between the two governments.
