Performing Better than Pakistan! PayPal Launches in SriLanka, Not Yet Available in Pakistan

by Mahnoor Arif

Sri Lanka has taken a major step forward in digital payments as PayPal has officially launched cross-border payment services in the country. Through partnerships with local banks, Sri Lankans can now send and receive international payments more easily and securely.

On May 15, the launch event took place with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya as the patron. She praised the partnership between PayPal and Sri Lanka’s banking sector as a significant achievement that aligns with the government’s vision for a digital economy.

Initially, the service will be offered through prominent banking partners such as Bank of Ceylon, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, and Sampath Bank, with additional banks expected to come on board in the upcoming months.

PayPal’s entry is being seen as a boost for Sri Lanka’s digital economy. It will provide trusted and convenient online payment options, encouraging more people to do business with global clients.

While Sri Lanka has successfully introduced PayPal services, Pakistan still does not have official PayPal support. Pakistani freelancers and businesses continue to rely on alternative and often expensive payment methods like Payoneer and bank transfers.

This development has sparked discussion in Pakistan, with many wondering when the country will also get direct PayPal services to support its large freelance community and growing digital economy.
