The United Arab Emirates (UAE) became the first country after the United States and Israel to use the famous Iron Dome air defence system. This happened during the early phase of the recent war with Iran, according to a report by the US news website Axios.
Israel quietly sent one Iron Dome battery, along with interceptors and several dozen Israeli soldiers to operate it. The deployment came after a phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed. Netanyahu ordered the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to move the system quickly to help protect the UAE.
Iran launched heavy attacks on the UAE, around 550 ballistic and cruise missiles plus over 2,200 drones, more than on any other Gulf country. The Iron Dome successfully intercepted dozens of these incoming threats, helping defend critical areas. Most Iranian projectiles were stopped by various defences, but some caused damage.
This was the first time Israel sent an Iron Dome battery abroad for operational use. The system, developed by Israel’s Rafael company, is known for shooting down short-range rockets and missiles with high accuracy.
The move shows much closer military and intelligence ties between Israel and the UAE since the Abraham Accords of 2020. A senior Israeli official said the UAE proved to be a true ally, and the secret help strengthened their partnership during the conflict.
The deployment remained undisclosed until the Axios report on April 26, 2026. It highlights how countries in the region are working together against shared threats despite past differences.
