Former Taxi Driver from Pakistan Becomes Lord Mayor of Manchester

In an inspiring success story, Pakistan-born Shaukat Ali has been sworn in as the 128th Lord Mayor of Manchester, United Kingdom.

Shaukat Ali originally hails from Batli village in Kashmir. He moved to the UK at the age of 16 and started working in the textile industry. Later, he ran his own business and worked as a licensed taxi driver while continuing his studies in English and Information Technology.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Shaukat Ali described the moment as deeply emotional, revealing that his mother had passed away just one day earlier. Despite his personal loss, he took on the prestigious role with dignity and commitment.

Shaukat Ali has been serving as a councillor since 2012. As Lord Mayor, he plans to focus on supporting children in social care and promoting unity among different communities in Manchester during his one-year term.
