Saudi Arabia Suspends Contracts of 1,800 Foreign Umrah Travel Agencies

by Mahnoor Arif

Saudi Arabia has suspended contracts of 1,800 foreign Umrah travel agencies after they failed to meet required performance and service standards, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. The decision is part of the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of services provided to pilgrims and protect their rights during Umrah journeys.

The suspended agencies make up a large portion of the nearly 5,800 Umrah travel operators working with Saudi authorities worldwide. Officials clarified that the suspension currently applies only to the issuance of new Umrah visas. Pilgrims who already hold valid visas or have confirmed bookings through these agencies will not be affected by the move.

The ministry stated that inspections and performance reviews revealed shortcomings related to accommodation arrangements, transport services, coordination failures, and lack of compliance with agreed service standards. These issues can cause serious difficulties for pilgrims, especially during peak seasons, prompting authorities to take strict action.

To allow agencies a fair chance to comply, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has given the suspended firms a 10-day period to address and correct the identified deficiencies. Agencies that successfully meet the required standards within this timeframe may have their contracts restored. However, those who fail to comply could face extended suspensions or permanent termination of their agreements.

Saudi authorities emphasized that monitoring of Umrah operators will continue through digital tracking systems and on-ground inspections. The goal is to ensure transparency, accountability, and a smooth pilgrimage experience for visitors from around the world.

This action reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to raise service standards in the Umrah and Hajj sector, strengthen pilgrim confidence, and ensure that religious visitors are treated with care, dignity, and respect throughout their stay.
