Morocco has named its 1,055-kilometer Tiznit–Dakhla Expressway the “President Donald Trump Highway,” honoring U.S. President Donald Trump and highlighting the close relationship between Rabat and Washington. Trump announced the recognition on his Truth Social platform, thanking King Mohammed VI for what he described as a “great honor.”
The massive highway stretches from Tiznit in southern Morocco to Dakhla in the Moroccan-controlled territory of Western Sahara. Covering approximately 655 miles (1,055 kilometers), it is one of Africa’s longest highway projects and is valued at around $1 billion. Construction began in 2015, and the expressway became fully operational in 2025.
The highway forms a key part of Morocco’s long-term infrastructure strategy. Running along the Atlantic coast, it connects major cities including Guelmim, Tan-Tan, Laayoune, Boujdour, and Dakhla. Officials expect the route to improve transportation, strengthen trade with sub-Saharan Africa, enhance road safety, and support the future Dakhla Atlantic Port.
The naming also carries diplomatic significance. During Trump’s first presidency in 2020, the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty claim over Western Sahara as part of a broader regional agreement involving the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel. That decision strengthened ties between the two countries and remains an important milestone in their relationship.
