Pakistan’s Salaried-Class Paid Rs.44 Billion in Tax in Just One Month

Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) recorded a strong start to the new fiscal year, collecting Rs44 billion in income tax from salaried individuals during July 2026, despite reductions in tax rates for some higher-income groups.

The latest collection surpassed the Rs42 billion collected in July 2025 and was significantly above the Rs30 billion recorded during July 2024. The figures indicate that tax receipts from salaried taxpayers have continued to rise even after changes were introduced under the latest federal budget.

As part of the new tax measures, the government lowered rates for individuals earning more than Rs2.2 million annually. Despite these adjustments, the increase in overall collections suggests that the salaried segment continues to make a substantial contribution to government revenues.

The rise may also reflect stronger compliance, changes in taxable incomes and improved collection mechanisms. Salaried employees generally have taxes deducted at source, making this category an important and relatively consistent revenue stream for the government.

However, the trend was different in the property sector. Tax collections from property transactions declined, even though the number of transactions increased. The contrasting performance highlights differences in how tax revenues are being generated across various economic activities.

The latest figures will likely remain important for policymakers as the government works to strengthen revenue collection and improve tax compliance. Maintaining higher collections while reducing the burden on selected income groups could remain a key challenge for the authorities.

The July results provide an early indication of tax collection trends for the new financial year, with future monthly figures expected to show whether the increase in salaried-person income tax can be sustained.
