Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, will take legal action against Apple. He accuses the tech giant of breaking antitrust laws by unfairly ranking apps in its App Store.
Musk claims Apple gives special treatment to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. At the moment, ChatGPT is in the top position on the US App Store, while xAI’s chatbot, Grok, is ranked fifth. He also pointed out that Apple has a business partnership with OpenAI, which allows ChatGPT to be built into Apple devices.
According to Musk, Apple’s “Must Have” apps section also appears biased. He questions why the X app (formerly Twitter, which Musk owns) and Grok are missing from that list, despite being popular and widely used.
This dispute comes at a time when Apple’s control over the App Store is already facing strong criticism. Regulators in both the United States and the European Union have accused Apple of anti-competitive behavior. The company has faced investigations, legal challenges, and even fines for allegedly using its dominant position to limit competition and favor its own partners.
Musk’s planned lawsuit could add more pressure on Apple as it defends its policies. If the case goes forward, it may reignite the debate over how app stores should operate, how rankings are determined, and whether companies like Apple should be forced to change their rules to create fairer competition.
For now, Apple has not responded to Musk’s accusations, but the situation is likely to attract global attention in the tech world.
