In a landmark move for Pakistan’s technology ecosystem, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has acquired Pakistani generative AI startup Jams, founded by former Meta engineers Asad Awan and Hamza Aftab. This acquisition highlights Pakistan’s growing influence in the global AI innovation landscape.
Jams specializes in creating authentic video experiences through generative AI, enabling users to produce realistic, human-like video content powered by advanced machine learning. The startup’s expertise in combining creativity with AI-driven realism attracted global attention, ultimately leading to its integration into OpenAI’s rapidly expanding ecosystem.
This acquisition also marks a historic milestone for Pakistan’s venture capital landscape, as it represents the first exit for Indus Valley Capital (IVC), one of the country’s most active early-stage investors. Jams was backed by IVC and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm.
Aatif Awan, Founder and Managing Partner at IVC, celebrated the achievement, saying it’s “proof that Pakistani talent can compete on the world stage.” He added that the acquisition reflects how Pakistan’s new generation of founders is driving innovation in frontier technologies like AI, robotics, and data science.
For Pakistan, this deal not only boosts investor confidence but also positions the country as an emerging player in global AI development and startup innovation, signaling a promising future for its expanding tech community.
