Pakistan’s Internet Future! Satellite Broadband Plan Reaches Final Stage

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan is close to a major digital breakthrough as its satellite internet regulatory framework has reached the final stage of approval.

The federal cabinet is expected to soon approve the licensing system for satellite-based broadband services. This framework has been prepared by the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). It covers Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems.

Global companies such as Starlink, OneWeb, and others have already shown strong interest. Starlink has registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), while several other operators are completing registration. The new rules aim to simplify licensing with a single licence valid for 15 years and focus on national security, spectrum management, data protection, and affordable services.

Once approved, satellite internet could bring fast and reliable connectivity to remote villages, mountains, and underserved areas where traditional fibre or mobile networks are difficult to install. Officials say this will boost digital inclusion, education, business, and emergency services across the country.

The plan is part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to expand high-speed internet access and attract foreign investment in the telecom sector. Services could begin rolling out within 18 months after final approval. This development marks an important step toward modernising Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.
