Google has officially started building its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the United States. The groundbreaking ceremony for the massive project took place on Tuesday in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, in Andhra Pradesh. The tech giant plans to invest around $15 billion over the next five years to develop this advanced AI data center campus.

The project was first announced in October 2025. It will create a 1-gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure that includes powerful data centers, new energy systems, and expanded fiber-optic networks. Google is also planning to bring international subsea cables to the area, turning Visakhapatnam into an important connectivity hub on India’s east coast. The company is working with partners like AdaniConneX and Airtel for the development.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian had earlier described the Visakhapatnam facility as the company’s largest AI hub anywhere outside America. At the event, Google’s Vice President for Global Infrastructure, Bikash Koley, highlighted the project as a major step for innovation and AI growth in the region. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also participated in the foundation stone laying ceremony.

This investment is expected to create thousands of jobs and strengthen India’s position in global artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

The project aligns with India’s goal of becoming a major player in AI technology. Once completed, the hub will help power Google’s AI services not just in India but across the world.
