Iran Suspends Visa-Free Entry for Indian Tourists from November 22

by Mahnoor Arif

In a significant policy shift, Iran has announced the suspension of its visa-free entry program for Indian nationals holding ordinary passports, effective November 22, 2025. The move ends a facility introduced in February 2024 to revitalize tourism and foster stronger ties with India, allowing visa-free visits for up to 15 days every six months for tourism purposes only.

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the decision via a post on X, stating: “The implementation of the one-way tourist visa cancellation regulations for Indian nationals holding ordinary passports in the Islamic Republic of Iran has been suspended as of 22nd November 2025.”

This reversal comes after reports of widespread misuse, including Indian citizens being lured with fake job offers or promises of onward travel to Europe and Central Asia, leading to instances of job fraud and kidnappings.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an advisory on November 17, warning citizens against traveling to Iran on dubious assurances and highlighting risks of exploitation by criminal networks. “The government of Iran has suspended the visa waiver facility to prevent further misuse by criminal elements,” the MEA noted, urging travelers to exercise caution.

The change will impact not just tourists drawn to Iran’s UNESCO-listed gems like Isfahan’s intricate mosques, Shiraz’s poetic gardens, and Persepolis ruins, but also budget travelers using Iranian airports as transit hubs to Europe.

From November 22, all Indian nationals must obtain a pre-approved visa, requiring documents such as a passport valid for at least six months, proof of itinerary, and application forms submitted through Iranian embassies or authorized agents.

While the suspension aims to enhance security and organized tourism, it could deter spontaneous trips and strain bilateral travel flows. Iranian officials express hope that stricter controls will promote safer visits, but for now, Indian adventurers must plan ahead.
