Gilgit-Baltistan Bans Seasonal Hotels, Commercial Activity in Deosai National Park

by Mahnoor Arif

The Gilgit Baltistan government has imposed a complete ban on seasonal hotels and all commercial activities inside Deosai National Park, aiming to protect the park’s fragile ecosystem and preserve its natural beauty. The decision was announced through a notification issued by the Forest, Parks, and Wildlife Department.

According to the notification, hotel owners and private operators are strictly prohibited from setting up tourist accommodations, tents, or any form of commercial infrastructure within the park. Authorities have warned that legal action will be taken against individuals or businesses found violating the ban. The move comes amid growing concerns over unregulated tourism and environmental damage.

Deosai National Park is one of the highest plateaus in the world, located between Skardu and Astore at an altitude of over 4,100 meters. Known as the “Land of Giants,” it attracts thousands of visitors every summer with its vast plains, colorful wildflowers, crystal clear streams, and rare wildlife. The park is also home to the Himalayan brown bear, one of the most endangered species in the region.

Officials say unchecked commercial activity has led to waste pollution, habitat disruption, and pressure on wildlife, threatening the long term health of the ecosystem. By enforcing this ban, the government aims to promote responsible tourism and ensure that Deosai remains protected for future generations.

Environmental experts have welcomed the decision, calling it a positive step toward conservation. They stress that sustainable tourism practices are essential to balance visitor interest with environmental protection. The ban is expected to encourage eco-friendly travel and reinforce Deosai’s status as a preserved natural heritage site.
