Medina has Been Recognized as World’s Healthiest City by World Health Organization

by Mahnoor Arif

Medina has been officially recognized as one of the world’s healthiest cities by the World Health Organization (WHO), marking a major achievement for Saudi Arabia’s public health and urban development efforts. The holy city first received the prestigious “Healthy City” certification in 2019 and successfully earned re-accreditation in August 2025 with an impressive score of 80 points.

The WHO Healthy City program assesses cities against 80 strict standards that focus on improving residents’ quality of life. These standards include access to parks and green spaces, safe walking paths, well-equipped primary healthcare centers, clean environments, and effective health awareness programs in schools. Medina met these requirements through consistent planning, investment, and community-focused initiatives.

With this latest recognition, Medina has become the second-largest Healthy City in the Middle East with a population of over one million, following Jeddah. The achievement highlights the city’s balanced approach to health, combining modern infrastructure with social well-being and environmental care.

Officials say the recognition reflects Medina’s commitment to preventive healthcare, active lifestyles, and inclusive urban services. The city has expanded pedestrian-friendly areas, strengthened primary healthcare networks, and promoted healthy habits among residents of all ages.

The WHO accreditation also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals, which prioritize public health, sustainability, and improved living standards. For residents and millions of visitors who travel to Medina each year, the title reinforces the city’s image as not only a spiritual center, but also a model for healthy and sustainable urban living.

This milestone places Medina among the leading global cities that prioritize health, safety, and overall quality of life.
