Sri Lanka Requests PCB Not to Boycott India Match

by Mahnoor Arif

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has formally asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reconsider reports suggesting a possible boycott of the India Pakistan match during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The high profile fixture is scheduled to take place on February 15 in Colombo and is one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.

According to sources familiar with the matter, SLC has expressed serious concern over the potential impact of Pakistan’s withdrawal.

The board warned that the absence of such a major match could lead to heavy financial losses, not only for Sri Lanka Cricket but also for broadcasters, sponsors, and event partners who rely on India Pakistan games for strong viewership and revenue.

SLC also highlighted the wider economic impact. The cricket board noted that hotels in Colombo and nearby areas have already reported booking cancellations following speculation about the match.

Tourism and hospitality sectors, which expect a surge of visitors during the World Cup, could suffer setbacks if the match does not go ahead as planned.

In its communication, Sri Lanka Cricket emphasized its responsibilities as the host nation. It stated that all security, logistical, and ticketing arrangements for the match have been fully finalized in coordination with the ICC and local authorities. SLC assured that players, officials, and fans would be provided a safe and professional environment.

The Sri Lankan board also recalled its long standing support for Pakistan cricket, especially during times when Pakistan faced challenges hosting international teams. It urged PCB to consider the spirit of cooperation and regional cricket relations.

The PCB has not yet issued an official response. However, the situation remains under close watch as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 approaches.
