“The Man Who Can Call Trump Anytime and Be Welcomed in Tehran” Journalist Pepe Escobar on Field Marshal Asim Munir

by Mahnoor Arif

Brazilian journalist Pepe Escobar has described Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir as a unique and powerful figure in global diplomacy. In recent comments, Escobar called him “the man who can call Trump anytime and be welcomed in Tehran.” This highlights Munir’s rare position as a trusted go-between for two rival powers.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir serves as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and the first Chief of Defence Forces. He was promoted to the five-star rank of Field Marshal in 2025. Escobar says Munir has built strong personal links with US President Donald Trump while maintaining good relations with Iranian leaders.

Munir recently visited Tehran and met senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian. These meetings focused on reducing tensions and preparing for possible new talks between Iran and the United States. Observers note that Pakistan’s neutral yet friendly ties with both countries give it a special role in back-channel diplomacy.

Escobar’s comment reflects growing international attention on Pakistan’s efforts to act as a bridge for peace. Many see Munir’s influence as key to keeping fragile dialogue alive in a dangerous region. His ability to speak directly with Trump and still be received warmly in Tehran makes him a rare player in today’s complex geopolitics.

This recognition also boosts Pakistan’s image as a responsible regional power working for stability.
