JD Vance Will Not Lead US Delegation for Iran-US Talks in Pakistan, Donald Trump

by Mahnoor Arif

US President Donald Trump said that Vice President JD Vance will not lead the American delegation for the upcoming Iran-US talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. Trump announced on Saturday, April 18, 2026, while speaking about the next round of negotiations.

The talks are scheduled to begin on Monday evening, April 20. They aim to extend a fragile ceasefire and reduce tensions, especially after recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump explained that JD Vance will not travel this time, mainly because of security reasons. The Secret Service could not arrange proper protection on such short notice. He added that Vance is doing a great job but this round needs a different team for safety.

The US delegation will still include senior officials such as special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Pakistan is again playing the role of host and mediator for these important meetings.

The first round of face-to-face talks in Islamabad earlier this month lasted 21 hours but ended without a full agreement. Differences remain on Iran’s nuclear programme and security in the Gulf.

Both sides hope the new meeting will bring more progress before the current ceasefire ends. Trump warned that failure to reach an agreement could lead to serious consequences.
