KPK Appoints Transgender Warders for The First Time in History

by Mahnoor Arif

In a landmark move for social justice, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has appointed its first-ever transgender prison warder, Sobia Khan, popularly known as ‘Bebo’. This historic step marks the first time members of the transgender community have been recruited into the province’s Prisons Department, signaling a major shift toward inclusion and equality in the public sector.

The recruitment process was thorough and challenging. To earn their positions, the candidates had to pass rigorous physical fitness tests, written examinations, and professional interviews. While the government had reserved 18 positions specifically for the transgender community under a special quota, only two candidates applied and successfully cleared all the requirements.

Officials believe the low turnout was mainly due to a lack of awareness within the community. However, they are hopeful that these two will set the path for others.

The Chief Minister of KPK personally handed over the appointment letters during a special ceremony, highlighting the government’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all citizens. Saeeda Khan, President of the All Artists Association Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, also welcomed the decision and appreciated the efforts of the provincial government.

This development is being celebrated as a major victory for human rights. It proves that barriers are finally breaking down, even in traditional sectors.
