Rs. 3000 Billion Defence Budget Proposed for 2026-2027

by Mahnoor Arif

The federal government has proposed a defence budget of around Rs. 3,000 billion for the 2026 to 2027 fiscal year, marking a notable increase from the previous year. The higher allocation reflects the country’s focus on maintaining national security, strengthening military readiness, and supporting defence operations.

The proposed budget is expected to cover salaries and pensions for military personnel, training, equipment maintenance, infrastructure, and the purchase of modern technology. It will also help fund the operational needs of Pakistan’s armed forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The increase comes at a time when regional security concerns and border management remain important priorities. Officials say the additional funding is intended to ensure that defence institutions remain prepared to respond to evolving challenges while protecting the country’s sovereignty.

Despite the larger allocation, defence spending remains only one part of the overall federal budget. Significant funds have also been set aside for debt servicing, development projects, education, health, and social welfare programmes.

Economic experts note that balancing security needs with investments in public services is essential for long term national progress. At the same time, maintaining fiscal discipline and improving revenue collection will be important to manage rising government expenditures.

The proposed defence budget will now be reviewed as part of the parliamentary budget process before receiving final approval for the upcoming fiscal year.
