Pakistan’s continued reliance on imported spices is putting additional pressure on the country’s food import bill, with official data showing significant spending on the commodity.
According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Pakistan imported spices worth $227.6 million during FY2025, up from $196.3 million a year earlier. The figures, based on Pakistan Bureau of Statistics customs records, cover a broad category of imported spices used by households and the food-processing industry.
The latest data comes as Pakistan’s overall food import bill remains substantial. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26, citing PBS data, shows that food imports remained one of the country’s major import categories, with spices forming part of the overall food-import basket.
Spices including pepper, turmeric, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and other seasonings are widely consumed in Pakistan. While the country produces several varieties domestically, importers continue to source products from international markets to meet demand for specific spices and quality grades.
The rising import expenditure also highlights an opportunity for Pakistan’s agriculture sector. Expanding domestic spice cultivation, improving crop yields and developing modern processing and storage facilities could help reduce dependence on imported products.
The government could further support the sector through improved seeds, modern farming techniques, better post-harvest handling and investment in food-processing facilities.
Pakistan’s spice industry also has export potential if producers can consistently meet international quality and food-safety standards.
The latest figures underline the need to strengthen local production and value addition, which could reduce pressure on foreign exchange while creating new opportunities for farmers, processors and exporters.
