Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the Makkah Defence Agreement as an extension of the bilateral defence pact signed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia last year, highlighting the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The prime minister said the new trilateral defence agreement involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye is entirely defensive in nature. He stressed that the agreement is not designed for aggression or confrontation but aims to strengthen regional peace, security, stability and prosperity.
According to PM Shehbaz, the agreement reflects the shared commitment of the three countries to protecting their national interests while contributing to a more peaceful and stable region. He said enhanced defence cooperation can play an important role in addressing emerging security challenges and promoting greater regional stability.
The prime minister also praised Field Marshal Asim Munir for his efforts in securing the agreement. He described the development as an important achievement for Pakistan and a reflection of the country’s strong defence relationship with Saudi Arabia.
PM Shehbaz further said that Pakistan’s armed forces consider it an honour to stand alongside Saudi forces in safeguarding the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. He emphasized the special significance of the two holy cities and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the security of the Kingdom.
The agreement is expected to further deepen defence and strategic cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Islamabad has maintained that the pact is focused on collective security and regional peace rather than military aggression.
The development marks another significant step in strengthening Pakistan-Saudi ties while expanding strategic cooperation with Türkiye. It also underlines Pakistan’s continued role in supporting peace, stability and security across the region.
