Elan Musk SpaceX Turns Alphabets $900 Million Investment into $94 Billion

Alphabet’s long-term investment in SpaceX has delivered an extraordinary return, with its stake reportedly growing from an initial $900 million investment to around $94 billion by the end of June 2026.

The technology giant made its early investment in Elon Musk’s space company more than a decade ago, when SpaceX was still developing its position in the commercial space industry. Since then, the company has expanded rapidly, transforming from a rocket developer into a major player in satellite communications and space technology.

SpaceX’s reported $86 billion initial public offering has dramatically increased the value of Alphabet’s holding. The company is now reported to own approximately 551.2 million SpaceX shares, making Alphabet the largest disclosed institutional shareholder.

The increase represents a gain of more than 100 times on Alphabet’s original investment, illustrating the potential rewards of backing high-growth technology ventures at an early stage.

SpaceX’s expansion has been driven by developments including its launch operations and satellite-based internet business, helping the company establish a much larger commercial footprint than it had when Alphabet first invested.

For Alphabet, the SpaceX stake represents an unusually successful investment outside its core internet and technology businesses. The value of the holding also demonstrates how early strategic investments in private companies can generate substantial returns when those businesses achieve exceptional growth.

The deal has become a notable example of Alphabet’s willingness to invest in emerging technologies with long-term potential. As SpaceX continues to expand its operations, the value of Alphabet’s stake could remain an important part of the technology company’s broader investment portfolio.
