Pakistan is moving ahead with plans to develop a 400-acre Garments City at Port Qasim in Karachi, a project aimed at expanding the country’s textile manufacturing capacity and creating new opportunities for exports and investment.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that the development will be implemented in phases. The initial phase will cover 250 acres and is projected to generate nearly 138,000 jobs, providing a major boost to employment in the textile and apparel sector. The project is also expected to contribute around $2.5 billion to the economy.
The proposed Garments City will focus heavily on private-sector participation, with facilities designed to meet international manufacturing standards. By bringing production, supporting services and related businesses into one dedicated zone, the initiative is expected to create a more efficient environment for garment manufacturers and exporters.
A one-window system will also be introduced to make business procedures easier for exporters. The arrangement is intended to reduce administrative delays and allow companies to manage key processes through a streamlined platform.
The Port Qasim Authority will be responsible for providing essential infrastructure and utility services required for the development. Authorities also plan to incorporate environmentally friendly technologies, reflecting growing attention to sustainable industrial production.
The project comes as Pakistan seeks to increase the value of its textile exports by moving beyond traditional manufacturing and strengthening its position in international apparel markets.
Once developed, the Garments City could become an important industrial hub, attracting investment, supporting large-scale employment and helping Pakistan expand its footprint in the global garment industry.
