Next Toyota Corolla Expected to Offer Hybrid, PHEV and Electric Versions

by urooj Fatima

Toyota is preparing a major update for its popular Corolla, with the next-generation model expected to offer gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and fully electric powertrain options.

The new Corolla is expected to arrive around 2027, potentially as a 2028 model-year vehicle. Toyota has already previewed the future model through a concept, showing a more modern design and a platform developed to support different powertrains.

The hybrid version is expected to use a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Reports suggest the system could produce around 134 horsepower and deliver improved fuel efficiency compared with the current hybrid. An all-wheel-drive version may also be available.

For the first time, the Corolla lineup is also expected to include a plug-in hybrid model. The PHEV would use a larger battery than the standard hybrid, allowing it to travel farther using electric power alone. However, Toyota has not yet announced detailed specifications or electric-only range.

The biggest change could be the introduction of a fully electric Corolla. Reports indicate that the EV could be offered with either a single- or dual-motor setup and may provide at least 250 miles of range.

Toyota CEO Koji Sato has previously described the future Corolla as a model that can accommodate different energy sources, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid and gasoline power.

The new lineup would give Corolla buyers more powertrain choices while Toyota continues developing vehicles for different markets and driving needs.
