At least 40 people lost their lives after a passenger bus plunged into a deep valley on the Quetta–Peshawar Highway in Balochistan, according to rescue officials.
The accident reportedly occurred when the bus lost control while traveling through a mountainous section of the highway. The vehicle fell into a deep ravine, causing heavy damage and leaving dozens of passengers trapped inside.
Rescue teams, police and local volunteers rushed to the scene and launched a large-scale operation to recover victims and assist the injured. Several passengers were taken to nearby hospitals, where emergency treatment was provided.
Officials fear the death toll could rise as some of the injured remain in critical condition.
Authorities have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Initial reports suggest that speeding, difficult road conditions or a possible mechanical fault may have contributed to the accident, although officials have not yet confirmed the reason.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. They offered condolences to the bereaved families and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for those injured.
Road accidents remain a major challenge in Pakistan, particularly on mountainous routes where difficult terrain and unsafe driving conditions increase the risk of serious crashes.
Officials have urged transport operators to follow traffic rules and ensure vehicles are properly maintained to help prevent similar tragedies.
