Pakistan has made huge progress in clean energy by making solar power the country’s biggest source of electricity. According to Ember data shared by Reuters, solar energy provided 25.3% of all utility-supplied electricity in Pakistan during the first four months of 2025.
This is a major jump from 2023, when solar was the fifth-largest power source in the country. Now, Pakistan is among fewer than 20 countries in the world where solar energy provides more than 25% of monthly electricity needs.
The main reason for this rapid growth is the massive rise in solar panel imports, especially from China. Between 2022 and 2024, Pakistan’s solar imports from China increased five times, reaching a total capacity of 16,600 megawatts (MW). This increase in solar capacity has helped power more homes and businesses across the country with clean, renewable energy.
Experts say this shift is not only good for the environment, but it also reduces Pakistan’s dependence on costly fuel imports. With more sunlight available throughout the year, Pakistan has great potential to grow even further in solar power.
The country’s focus on solar energy shows a strong commitment to building a greener, more sustainable future. As solar becomes more affordable and accessible, more people and industries are expected to switch to clean energy solutions.
Pakistan’s success with solar energy sets a great example for other developing countries looking to reduce carbon emissions and boost energy independence.
