Good News! Pakistanis Can Now Hold Dual Nationality With Germany

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistanis living in Germany have received welcome news as they are now allowed to hold dual nationality with Germany. The announcement was shared by the Pakistan Embassy in Germany under Pakistan’s expanded dual citizenship framework. This step is being seen as a major relief for overseas Pakistanis who had long faced legal and identity challenges.

The decision follows the passage of the Pakistan Citizenship Amendment Bill 2024, which allows dual nationality with 22 countries. These include the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, and now Germany. Earlier, Pakistanis living in countries without formal agreements were often forced to give up their Pakistani citizenship to obtain a foreign nationality.

Under the new law, this issue has been addressed. Pakistanis who had previously renounced their citizenship due to such restrictions can now have their Pakistani nationality restored. Lawmakers say this change aims to protect the rights of overseas Pakistanis and recognize their contribution to the country’s economy and global image.

The move is expected to benefit thousands of Pakistanis living in Germany, particularly professionals, students, and long-term residents. Dual nationality will make travel, property ownership, banking, and legal matters easier for them in both countries.

Government officials have stated that this step will also help strengthen Pakistan’s ties with its overseas community. Talks are reportedly ongoing to include more countries, with Turkey being one of the next possible additions.

Overall, the decision is being welcomed as a positive step toward supporting overseas Pakistanis and keeping them connected to their homeland while they build lives abroad.
