CCP Approves PTCL’s Acquisition of Telenor Pakistan

by Hameed

PTCL has agreed to the conditions set by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) for its planned acquisition of Telenor Pakistan in a deal worth $40 billion. This agreement has removed the main hurdle in the process, and now the CCP is expected to issue its final approval order. The acquisition had been delayed for nearly 18 months, but it is now moving toward completion.

Once the deal goes through, PTCL’s mobile arm, Ufone, will merge with Telenor Pakistan. Together, the two companies will form a telecom operator that will be almost as large as Jazz, the current market leader, and will also overtake Zong in size. Industry experts believe this will significantly change the telecom landscape in Pakistan, creating stronger competition among the top players.

The CCP has also introduced a set of safeguards to ensure that the newly merged company does not misuse its dominant position. These measures include regulations related to pricing, interconnection with other networks, and maintaining fair competition across the industry.

The merger is seen as a major development for Pakistan’s telecom sector. It is expected to not only increase competition but also encourage better services and improved options for customers across the country.
