North Korea Tests Cruise, Anti-Ship Miss!les from Naval Destroyer

by Mahnoor Arif

North Korea has successfully test-fired strategic cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles from its advanced Choe Hyon-class destroyer, according to state media.

The test was conducted on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in the waters off the country’s west coast. Leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the launch along with senior defence officials and naval commanders. Two strategic cruise missiles and three anti-warship (anti-ship) missiles were fired during the exercise.

The main purpose of the test was to evaluate the destroyer’s integrated weapons command system, train the crew in missile launch procedures, and check the accuracy and anti-jamming capabilities of the upgraded navigation systems. According to KCNA, the cruise missiles flew for more than two hours (approximately 7,869 to 7,920 seconds), while the anti-ship missiles flew for over 30 minutes (1,960 to 1,973 seconds). Both types of missiles accurately hit their targets.

The Choe Hyon-class is a 5,000-ton guided-missile destroyer. It is considered North Korea’s most advanced surface warship so far. This was the latest in a series of tests for the vessel, which first entered operational trials in 2025.

North Korea is rapidly expanding its naval power. Kim Jong Un has ordered the construction of more destroyers and stressed the need to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrence and overall combat readiness at sea.

This missile test comes at a time of rising global tensions. Analysts say North Korea is taking advantage of international distractions to modernise its military, particularly its navy.
