A huge fire at the Pakistan Customs warehouse in Lakpass, Mastung district near Quetta, has been burning out of control for more than 48 hours. The blaze, which started on May 10, 2026, has caused losses worth billions of rupees.

The fire broke out at the customs facility on the Quetta-Karachi highway, around 30 kilometres from Quetta. It quickly spread due to highly flammable materials stored in the warehouse, including confiscated goods, dry fruits, clothes, tires, fuel, and chemicals. An LPG tanker (bowser) parked nearby caught fire and exploded, worsening the situation and causing panic.

At least 35 people suffered burn and blast injuries. Several are in critical condition. Among the injured were senior officials, including the Relief Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner Mastung, and other district officers. Hospitals in Quetta declared an emergency to treat the victims.

Firefighting efforts involving more than 10 fire brigade vehicles have been hampered by strong winds and difficult terrain. Over 100 vehicles were also destroyed in the fire. The Quetta-Karachi highway was temporarily closed but later reopened.

Authorities are still struggling to fully control the blaze. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. This incident has raised serious concerns about safety measures at customs storage facilities holding valuable smuggled goods.
