The Ministry of Energy’s Power Division has issued an urgent warning to all electricity consumers in Pakistan. Fraudsters are using fake online links and QR codes to steal people’s personal and financial information by pretending to offer government electricity subsidies.
According to the Power Division spokesperson, scammers are sending suspicious messages and links that ask people to click and enter their details in a four-step process. After that, they are asked to share a six-digit verification code. Some fraudsters are also using fake QR codes printed or shared online to trick users.
Officials have made it very clear: Consumers should only use official government websites and platforms for any electricity bill relief or subsidy registration. No personal information related to electricity bills should be shared on any other website or with unknown persons.
The government has informed law enforcement agencies about these illegal activities. They also said that any technical issues on the official registration website have now been fixed. More than one million people have already successfully registered through the proper channel.
People are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious links or QR codes immediately. This scam targets citizens who are hoping for help with high electricity bills. Always double-check before clicking any link.
