Iraq is preparing to host part of the funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The announcement comes as Iran and Iraq coordinate arrangements for one of the region’s most significant state and religious events.
Araghchi said the funeral procession is expected to pass through Iraq before the late leader is laid to rest in Mashhad, Iran. The ceremonies are scheduled to take place over several days, with Iraq expected to host commemorative events on July 8.
Iraqi authorities are making security and logistical preparations to accommodate large crowds of mourners.
As the home of several important Shia holy sites, Iraq is expected to receive thousands of visitors from across the region during the funeral ceremonies.
Officials say senior political figures, religious scholars and foreign delegations are also expected to attend, highlighting the regional importance of the event. Additional security measures are being put in place to ensure the ceremonies are held peacefully.
