Pakistan has achieved a major academic milestone.
A total of 52 Pakistani universities are now listed in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026.
This puts Pakistan among only nine countries worldwide with more than 50 universities in the rankings. The list evaluated 1,646 universities from 116 countries.
The University of Lahore leads the nation. It ranked 71st globally, making it the first Pakistani university to enter the world’s top 100 for sustainability.
Three other institutions made the 301–400 band. They are Khawaja Fareed University of Engineering and IT, MNS University of Agriculture Multan, and Superior University.
Many others secured spots in higher bands. The 401–600 group includes Iqra University, NED University, University of Education Lahore, and the University of Wah.
The 601–800 band features Air University, Bahria University, GIK Institute, Islamia University Bahawalpur, and University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore.
Of the 52 ranked universities, 33 are public sector and 19 are private. This shows broad progress across Pakistan’s higher education system.
The rankings measure research, teaching, outreach, and stewardship. Universities are scored on their contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Globally, the University of Manchester ranked first. Griffith University in Australia placed second. The Philippines had the most universities listed, with 160.
The strong showing highlights Pakistan’s growing focus on sustainability, research impact, and global academic engagement
