Pakistan’s petroleum prices remain lower than several regional countries, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said on Tuesday, highlighting the government’s efforts to shield consumers despite global market volatility.

According to the minister, petrol in Pakistan is cheaper compared to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. While international crude prices have fluctuated above $85 per barrel, Pakistan has maintained relative stability at the pump through tax adjustments and targeted subsidies.

As of mid-July 2026, petrol is priced at Rs 272.15 per liter and high-speed diesel at Rs 284.35 per liter in Pakistan. In contrast, India’s average petrol price exceeds Rs 340 per liter, while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka face even higher rates due to import costs and currency depreciation.

The minister stressed that tax rationalization and efficient procurement by state oil companies have kept domestic prices competitive. “Our priority is to pass on relief where possible without derailing fiscal targets,” Malik said. The government reviews prices fortnightly based on global trends, exchange rates, and inland freight margins.

Despite lower prices, rising demand, rupee fluctuations, and smuggling to neighboring markets remain pressure points. Malik noted that long-term energy security depends on expanding refining capacity, diversifying fuel sources, and boosting EV adoption.

With global oil markets still uncertain, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to balancing affordability with fiscal discipline. Any future adjustments, the minister added, will prioritize transparency and minimal burden on the public.
