Rumors of Former Topian Airline Chairman Becoming PIA CEO Ends, He Joins Air India as CEO

Tewolde Gebremariam, the former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, ending speculation that he could take up a leadership role at Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Gebremariam’s name had reportedly emerged in discussions surrounding the appointment of a new PIA chief executive. His extensive experience in running one of Africa’s largest and most successful airlines made him a potential candidate as Pakistan looked for experienced leadership for the national carrier.

However, the former Ethiopian Airlines chief will now take charge of Air India, which is undergoing a major transformation under the ownership of the Tata Group. His appointment comes as the airline works to strengthen its international network, improve operational performance and enhance customer service.

Gebremariam served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines for more than a decade, overseeing a period of significant expansion. During his tenure, the carrier increased its fleet, expanded international routes and strengthened its position as one of Africa’s leading aviation groups.

His experience in managing rapid airline growth is expected to be valuable for Air India as it seeks to compete more strongly in the global aviation market.

The appointment also puts an end to speculation linking Gebremariam with PIA. Pakistan’s national airline is separately moving through a restructuring and privatization process aimed at improving efficiency and financial performance.

With Gebremariam now joining Air India, attention will remain on how his international aviation experience contributes to the airline’s ambitious growth plans and whether PIA can secure an equally experienced executive to lead its next phase.
