Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to resolve drainage and sewerage problems on a priority basis in more than 3,500 villages across Punjab under the Model Village Project.
The directive came during a meeting in Lahore reviewing progress on rural development projects. Officials briefed the chief minister that sewerage, drainage and brick-paved street projects are already progressing in over 3,500 villages across the province.
Maryam Nawaz ordered authorities to ensure that village streets are properly paved, cleaned and beautified, with particular attention given to areas affected by stagnant wastewater and damaged roads. She stressed that residents of rural areas deserve the same access to public resources and civic facilities as people living in cities.
The meeting also approved the introduction of community-based organisations (CBOs) under the Model Village Project. Assistant commissioners, community health mobilisers, Union Council secretaries, headmasters and other stakeholders will be involved to improve coordination and community participation.
Members of the provincial assembly will also be assigned responsibility for monitoring rural development projects in their respective areas, with the aim of ensuring timely implementation.
Maryam Nawaz said improving village infrastructure was a priority and expressed her determination to transform living conditions across Punjab’s villages. The initiative is expected to improve sanitation, reduce problems caused by stagnant water and provide residents with cleaner and better-developed streets.
The project marks a major push toward improving basic civic facilities in rural Punjab, particularly drainage, sewerage and street infrastructure.
