A food safety inspection in Lahore’s Gulberg area has reportedly uncovered expired meat, cheese and bakery products at a well-known supermarket, raising concerns over food safety and the quality of products being offered to consumers.
The inspection was conducted by the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) as part of its ongoing crackdown against businesses violating food safety regulations. According to reports, officials recovered expired food products during the operation and confiscated the items to prevent them from reaching consumers.
The affected sections of the supermarket were reportedly sealed following the discovery, while authorities also imposed penalties and initiated legal proceedings over the violations. The operation formed part of broader food safety inspections targeting supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, meat shops and other food businesses across Punjab.
The development has drawn particular attention because of the supermarket’s reputation among consumers in Lahore. The Gulberg outlet associated with the reports is Al Fatah Exclusive Mall – Hussain Chowk, a major retail destination in the city.
The PFA has intensified inspections across Punjab to ensure that businesses comply with food safety requirements. Its enforcement teams have recently checked meat shops, bakeries, grocery stores and food production facilities, discarding unsafe and substandard products and taking legal action against serious violations.
The authority has stressed that food businesses must maintain proper hygiene, ensure products remain within their permitted shelf life and follow applicable food safety regulations.
The incident highlights the importance of stronger monitoring of perishable products, particularly meat and bakery items, which can pose significant risks when stored or sold beyond their safe period.
Consumers are also being encouraged to check expiry dates and product condition before purchasing food items and to report suspected violations to the Punjab Food Authority.
