The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is now officially open to the public and all types of commercial air traffic. This major milestone was marked by the successful landing of the first commercial flight at the airport on January 20.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-503 departed from Karachi at 9:50 am and arrived at the newly built Gwadar airport at 11:15 am, carrying 46 passengers. This event signified the official beginning of NGIA’s operations, making it an important addition to Pakistan’s aviation network.
The opening of the New Gwadar International Airport is expected to significantly enhance connectivity, trade, and tourism in Pakistan. It is set to play a key role in boosting economic development and positioning Gwadar as a major hub for both regional and international business activities. The successful landing of PIA flight PK-503 is an important step toward making this vision a reality.
Before the airport became fully operational, a test flight was conducted to ensure everything was ready. On June 4, 2024, an Air King B700 aircraft successfully landed at NGIA as part of the testing phase. Later, on September 20, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) officially transferred the Multilayered Security Management System (MSMS) of the airport to the Airport Security Force (ASF), a key department under the Ministry of Aviation in Pakistan. This handover ensured that the airport meets high-security standards before beginning regular operations.
The New Gwadar International Airport covers an area of 4,300 acres and is designed with modern infrastructure to accommodate growing air traffic. It consists of 32 major components, including a state-of-the-art runway, spacious aprons, well-equipped terminals, and advanced civil, technical, electrical, and communication systems. The airport also features modern facilities to provide a smooth and efficient experience for passengers and airlines.
With its official opening, NGIA is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s air transport sector, support business and tourism, and create new opportunities for economic growth in Gwadar and beyond.
