No More Secured Chats? Instagram Turns Off End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages Starting Today

by Mahnoor Arif

Instagram has officially turned off end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Direct Messages starting May 8, 2026. This major change means users will no longer have fully private chats on the platform. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, can now access the content of messages, including texts, photos, videos, and voice notes.

The optional E2EE feature was introduced in 2023, but was never made the default setting. Meta said very few users actually turned on encrypted messaging, which is why the company decided to remove it. Users with old encrypted chats have been advised to download their messages and media before they become inaccessible.

Child safety groups have welcomed the move, saying it will help platforms scan for harmful content more easily. However, privacy advocates are strongly criticising the decision. They argue it weakens user security and gives Meta greater control over personal conversations.

This shift marks a significant U-turn from Meta’s earlier promise of stronger privacy. Many users are now worried about data protection and possible surveillance. Experts recommend using apps like WhatsApp (which still offers default E2EE) or Signal for truly private messaging.

The change has sparked widespread discussion online about digital privacy and how social media giants handle user data.
