The Punjab government has launched its first electric bus service, aiming to modernize public transport while cutting air pollution across major cities.
The initiative officially began this week with a flat fare of just Rs 20 per ride, making it one of the most affordable transit options in the province.
Officials confirmed that all students will travel completely free of charge. To avail the benefit, students must carry a valid college or school ID card and show it during boarding.
The move is designed to ease the financial burden on families and encourage youth to use public transport instead of private vehicles.
The initial phase covers Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan, with 150 air-conditioned e-buses deployed on high-demand routes. Each bus is equipped with GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, priority seating, and dedicated space for women.
The provincial transport department said charging stations have been installed at main depots, allowing buses to run 250 to 300 kilometers on a single charge.
Speaking at the launch in Wah, the Punjab Transport Minister said the project will reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion. “This is not just about buses. It’s about cleaner air, safer travel, and equal access for students,” he noted.
Commuters welcomed the low fare, noting that typical van and rickshaw rides cost Rs 50 to Rs 80 for similar distances. Daily riders expect to save over Rs 1,000 per month.
The government plans to expand the fleet to 500 buses by mid-2027 and add Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Sialkot to the network. A mobile app for live tracking and digital ticketing will also roll out next month.
