The federal government announced a small relief for motorists as petrol prices were decreased by Rs. 1.97 per litre, bringing the new petrol price to Rs. 297.53. The revised rates are part of the fortnightly fuel price review that factors in international crude oil trends, exchange rate movements, and domestic tax structure.
This adjustment follows the government’s recent decision to keep prices unchanged despite fluctuations in global markets. In the last review, the Petroleum Division had raised the Climate Support Levy by Rs. 2.50 per litre to Rs. 5 per litre, while simultaneously reducing the Petroleum Levy by Rs. 2.50 per litre on both petrol and high-speed diesel. That offset kept retail rates flat at Rs. 299.50 for petrol and Rs. 311.47 for diesel at the time.
The new Rs. 1.97 cut comes after several major relief rounds earlier in 2026. On June 19, the government slashed petrol by Rs. 74 per litre and diesel by Rs. 67 per litre after a sharp decline in international crude and easing Middle East tensions. Other revisions this year included Rs. 4 per litre cuts on June 13 and June 6, a Rs. 5 cut on May 16, and a Rs. 12 cut on April 11.
While the Rs. 1.97 decrease is modest compared to previous rounds, it offers some breathing room to transporters and daily commuters. Final pump prices may still vary slightly by region due to dealer and distributor margins. The Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division) issues official notifications for each revision, and the next price review is expected in mid-July based on the standard two-week cycle
