Pakistan is set to welcome athletes from across South Asia as it prepares to host the 14th South Asian Games from April 3 to 11, 2027. The event will return to the country after a gap of about 23 years, with the last edition hosted by Pakistan taking place in Islamabad in 2004.
The regional multi-sport event will be organised across Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar, bringing together athletes and officials from countries including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives. India has also confirmed its participation, with its representatives joining the recent planning meeting virtually.
The Games are expected to feature 28 sports and 346 medal events, with around 3,200 athletes taking part. A total of 28 competition venues across the three cities are being prepared for the event.
Islamabad will play a major role in the tournament and is planned to host the opening and closing ceremonies along with several sporting events. Lahore and Peshawar will also stage competitions, helping spread the event across different parts of the country.
The South Asian Games were originally planned for Pakistan several years ago but faced repeated delays. The latest decision to hold the event in April 2027 is being seen as an important step toward finally bringing the long-awaited competition to Pakistan.
Preparations are already underway, with officials reviewing sports venues, accommodation, transportation, operational arrangements and competition facilities. International representatives are also inspecting venues to assess Pakistan’s readiness.
For Pakistan, hosting the Games will provide an opportunity to showcase its sporting facilities and give local athletes the advantage of competing in front of home crowds. It could also help promote regional sporting ties and encourage greater interaction among athletes from South Asian countries.
After more than two decades, the return of the South Asian Games to Pakistan is therefore expected to be a major moment for the country’s sports community and a chance to put its athletes and sporting infrastructure in the regional spotlight.
